ENDORSEMENT OF MARY JONES -- REELECT HER SUPERVISOR, BERKELEY DISTRICT, JAMES CITY COUNTY, VIRGINIA

ENDORSEMENTY OF MARY JONES – SUPERVISOR FOR BERKELEY DISTRICT
In the November election, every citizen should consider recent JCC Board of Supervisors' actions before voting. A most important consideration is the recent tax increase, allegedly needed for a triple A bond rating and to replenish the reserve fund necessitated by irresponsible deficit spending to purchase land and development rights for $25 million over a few years. Justification? Land purchase approved by citizens earlier.
But, citizens were deceived. They were not told that land purchases would increase their taxes and were told that a triple-A bond rating would greatly reduce cost of debt service. Citizens were further misled, after approval of the increase, with claims of $6 million saved over ten years with a triple-A rating. Reality? Savings will be slim at $0.01%-0.05% of debt.
Proponents of the tax increase “sold” the deal, requiring an average of only $20/mo/home, as a quality of life issue. For whom? Not for a family living paycheck to paycheck. What do they sacrifice – school lunch for the children, less food on the table, no new clothes or shoes? What? Who “fought for them” as is the political rallying cry.
Only Mary Jones, Berkeley District Supervisor, “fought for them.” In spite of undeserved criticism and personal attacks Ms. Jones stood firm with grace, dignity and resolve against the tax increase. Berkeley voters, please reelect Ms. Jones for the good of all James City County residents. Her opponent, Ruth Larsen, defined herself by supporting Jim Kennedy, and other tax increase proponents, at his kickoff.
Joe Mann, PhD, Roberts District
